When creating this piece, I initially lacked a conscious rationale for juxtaposing these two extremes of my facial expression. It wasn’t until the sculpture was completed and observed in the context of its creation that I recognized the underlying urge behind it. This piece emerged during a period of transition, a pivotal moment marked by significant shifts from comfort to discomfort, security to insecurity, certainty to uncertainty, belief to disbelief, and calmness to rage and frustration.
Close inspection reveals the complexity of the facial expression, obscured by the varied topography of the piece, which features deep valleys and high peaks. However, stepping back allows one to perceive a clearer image, as the interplay of light and shadow accentuates the contours of the face, bringing forth the intended expression.
