I have always had a great admiration to the talent needed to be able to carve a 3D representation of the human body, or any other object for that matter, from a solid block of a marble stone. The planning needed, the vision of seeing the subject matter in the block ahead of time and of course the execution is nothing less than admirable.
With this piece, I attempted to have my own interpretation of a small portion from Michelangelo’s David statue. Using the same technique of image manipulation and conversion back to 3D representation and compiling layers of 2D flats to a 3D object.
From up close, it is very hard to see the facial expression and to make any sense of it, as the topography of the piece ranges from extremely deep valleys to very high peaks. Only once one steps back he can see the clearer image as the light bounces from the peaks and shadow is cast into the deep valleys are composing together the facial expression.
Later, a mold is made from this master and multiple reproductions are to be cast from colorful Urethane.
